DC plastic bag tax in full effect

Since January, our nation’s capitol has imposed a tax of 5 cents on every plastic bag used at the grocery store. Plastic bags have posed a huge pollution problem, and the materials they are made with aren’t exactly biodegradable or compostable. The result? Shoppers grumbled for the first week or so, but now many have adjusted to the new routine of bringing eco-friendly tote bags with them when they go food shopping. Not only are these bags made with recycled materials, but they are reusable, bigger, and sturdier to boot. What’s not to love?

Many shops have taken advantage of the new trend and are now selling wholesale tote bags branded with their company name and logo in the store.

A Beginner’s Guide to Tote Bags

With the variety of tote bags out there, there’s bound to be some confusion as to what the best bags for each situation is. I’ll highlight the unique benefits of each of the three most common variety of tote bags: conference totes, shopping totes, and grocery totes.

Conference totes, as the name suggests, are perfect for trade shows and conferences. These bags are typically medium sized and thinner, since they are mostly used to hold folders and less bulky items.

Grocery totes are one of the hottest trends in tote bags right now. They are similar in height to conference totes, but they are much deeper to accommodate bulky and odd-shaped groceries, such as a gallon of milk or a head of lettuce.

Shopping totes tend to be the widest of the bunch in order to accommodate larger boxes, such as shoes. They are generally more deep than conference totes, but less so than grocery totes. An image of a shopping tote is featured above.

Desigual

PICTURE COMING SOON!

I’m completely obsessed with the store Desigual, which sells atypical Spanish apparel, and I was elated when one opened in New York. About two weeks ago I was walking around on Broadway when I passed it and decided to go in and torture myself by trying on clothes that I love but 1) can’t afford and 2) don’t fit me correctly. To my delight, as I was leaving empty-handed a man outside of the store handed me a promotional tote! It was raining and the bag is waterproof with a velcro closure, so it was much appreciated as I popped my purse in there to keep it dry. Considering the prices of the store, I’m surprised they were giving anything away free. I’m not really sure what material this bag is made from, but it doesn’t appear to be very eco-friendly, which is the only downside.

Happening Now

Bank of America is having quite the bag promotion going on right now if you sign up for an account. Just look at the variety they’re giving away! You can (apparently, I did not stop to listen to the sales pitch) choose from an insulated grocery tote, what looks like a jute tote, or a regular old shopping tote. I guess if bags are your bag, you’ll want to be banking with Bank of America!
